MAI Construction Joins Forces with Second Harvest of Silicon Valley
On Wednesday, October 16th, a group of volunteers from MAI Construction, Inc. met up at Second Harvest of Silicon Valley to help sort, package, and load produce for distribution to local families in need. Throughout the year, MAI Construction personnel give of their time, energy and money to aid a number of community-focused charitable initiatives which help our communities and the people who call them home stronger and healthier.
Second Harvest was founded in 1974, and is one of the largest food bank networks in the nation. The organization estimates that one in four people in Silicon Valley is at risk of hunger. Fueled by ever-increasing rents and costs of living in the area, many people are forced to choose between paying their bills and eating. One out of every ten people in Silicon Valley gets at least some of the food for their families from Second Harvest. In addition to providing healthy, nourishing food for needy families, Second Harvest also helps connect people with federal nutrition programs and other resources to help ensure no one needs to go hungry. In 2019 alone, Second Harvest has provided nearly 41 million meals.
The eight-person MAI Construction volunteer crew met up and signed in at the Cisco Volunteer Wing. Then we made our way to the sorting room, where huge cardboard crates of pears were waiting for us. Our marketing coordinator, Ronele Herd, and our controller, Vickie Pedersen, were on hand both to help as part of the crew and to capture the fun candid moments our crew provided, taking plenty of snaps between rounds of work.
Over the next two hours, between sorting through crates of pears to perform quality control and packaging, mugging for the camera and having fun, Team MAI worked very hard. Our crew sorted 2,750lbs of produce during their two-hour shift, selecting the best fruit for packaging and distribution to local families. Everyone on the crew came away from the project feeling good and knowing they helped make a difference for people who really need it, and MAI Construction is very proud to have participated in this important behind-the-scenes work for Second Harvest.
MAI Construction, Inc. feels it’s our responsibility to give back to our community and help those who are less able to help themselves. Throughout the year, we support charitable drives and initiatives like the American Cancer Society, Bike for Breath, Copper’s Dream and Children’s Hospital. We believe all of these organizations and many more like them help make our community healthier, stronger and more capable. That’s why we are proud to donate our time and energy to helping strengthen the charities which strengthen our communities.
